Given what all these races were like in 2006, it’s likely that none would have been competitive, even if there were opponents. But it’s still a lot easier to win with no opponent at all. It’s also interesting that there are quite a few southern seats where Bush won in 2004, but the Democratic congressperson wins easily and has no opposition. There aren’t any equivalents in the other direction: Where there’s no Democrat running, not only did the Republican congressperson have an easy win in 2006, but so did Bush in 2004
Only Donald Payne went unopposed. According to politickernj.com (“Tough senate Race for Dems counterbalanced by cakewalk congressional primaries” by Max Pizarro, 11:23 pm, 4/7) the following races have opponents:
NJ-1 (r ) Fernando Powers, Dale Glading
NJ-6 (r) Peter Cerrato, James Hagan, Roberet McLeod
NJ-8 (r) article says there is an opponent but does not list him/her
NJ12 (r) same as NJ-8
Donald Payne in NJ-10 is specifically listed as unopposed. All Republicans drew at least one opponent. The largest primary field in either party is the Republican battle for NJ-7 with 7 contenders led by Leonard Lance and (former) first daughter Kate Whitman. Whitman has the name and the money but in a four county district, Lance has two county organizations endorsing him while Whitman and Kelly Hatfield have one apiece. Linda Stender is unopposed.
Btw, David Kurkowski filed in NJ-2.
Wow. And Pryor’s unopposed, too. How apathetic.
opposition, they would have spent a minimum of $300,000 each for a total of $8.7 million. Thanks Repubs!
